I REGRET BUILDING APC, GIVING BUHARI A PLATFORM TO BECOME PRESIDENT – TINUBU

The crisis rocking the ruling party, The All Progressive Congress (APC), seems to deepen further as the APC chieftain, Asiwaju Tinubu has lashed out to President Muhammadu Buhari following the Ondo governorship election.

L-R: Tinubu & Buhari
An undisclosed sources who reported to Abacityblog of the state of the current clash between Tinubu and Buhari, had it that Tinubu regretted of letting Buhari become the president of Nigeria under the platform of the All Progressive Congress, APC.

According to our sources, while receiving a segment of APC chieftains from South West who paid him a solidarity visit late yesterday evening after keeping them waiting for over 5 hrs, (from 5pm to 10 pm before seeing them).

Tinubu lashed out and said, ”I regret building APC and giving Buhari a platform to become president”.

“We all knew he didn’t merit to be president, but you know how we politicians behave when we are desperate for electoral position; We beg.

”That was how President Buhari always and frequently came to my private house here in Ikoyi with his entourage which included that Nasiru and others”.

”At a point, he “Buhari” was practically living in my house, under my roof. The room he was sleeping was just 6-7 steps from my own private room. I was building his confidence because he didn’t have it”.

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo's £15 million private jet crashed while trying to land in Barcelona on Monday evening. The plane, a Gulfstream G200 which he bought last year, is sometimes rented out to private clients or companies. The crash happened at El Prat airport.

The plane's landing gear broke on impact, and a runway at the airport was closed. None of the footballer's friends or family was onboard when the crash happened. The pilot was treated for minor injuries, but no one was seriously hurt.

Commuter Train Crashes Into Hoboken Terminal, Injuring At Least 100

A commuter train in New Jersey crashed into Hoboken Terminal in New Jersey on Thursday morning, resulting in multiple injuries and visible structural damage.
New Jersey transit officials said at least 100 people are injured, Stephen Nessen of WNYC reports. Joseph Scott, the CEO of Jersey City Medical Center, said the hospital had admitted some victims in critical or serious condition.
Gov. Chris Christie, speaking to MSNBC before noon Eastern, said that there had been one confirmed fatality. He told MSNBC and CNN that everyone trapped on the train has been rescued or removed, and that there was no indication that the crash was anything but an accident.
Nessen reports that passengers on from the train that crashed say it approached the station at "full speed" before slamming into the barrier at the end of the track, with the impact throwing riders onto the floor.

Passengers walk to safety after a NJ Transit train crashed in to the platform in Hoboken, N.J., on Thursday morning.

WNYC's Nancy Solomon arrived on the scene shortly after the crash, and says she personally saw 20 to 30 injured people, including at least four who were unable to walk.
She says a train had traveled "all the way into the station — not into the waiting room but into the outdoor part where people transfer."
The station suffered visible structural damage, with water spraying from the area affected. "About a fourth of the roof is collapsed," Solomon tells our Newscast unit.
Solomon spoke to one man who had been a passenger on the train that crashed, in the second car. He said he noticed the train didn't seem to be slowing down enough as it approached the station, and he braced himself for impact.

"People all around him were bloodied," Solomon says. "The train went dark after it crashed. People were screaming, and then they helped each other — there was really no assistance — they helped each other off the train."
Witness Ben Fairclough tells NPR's Morning Edition he, too, talked to people who were inside the train as it crashed.
"They said the train was shaking before it came to an eventual stop and it was moving at a high rate of speed," he says. "There were people climbing out of windows, there was water coming down from the top of the ceiling and there did appear to be folks who were unconscious."

There is no indication of what may have caused the accident. The Federal Railroad Administration has investigators on site, NPR's David Schaper reports, and the National Transportation Safety Board is gathering information on the crash.
Rail service in and out of Hoboken train station has been suspended, New Jersey Transit has announced. Transit buses and the NY Waterway are accepting rail tickets and passes.
Hoboken Terminal is a major commuter hub, connecting New Jersey Transit commuter rail to PATH trains into New York City. The station averages more than than 15,000 boardings each weekday on New Jersey Transit, and 28,000 each weekday on PATH.

Nigeria: Forex Scarcity Threatens Nigeria's Mission to Zambia

Abuja — The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is in the fix as it is struggling with preparations for the Super Eagles' visit to Zambia next weekend for the 2018 World Cup qualifier because of scarcity of foreign exchange.
After failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations next year in Gabon, Nigeria will be pitching to be at the World Cup and salvage its reputation as a continental soccer powerhouse.
THISDAY scooped last night that the high aspiration could be imperiled by the inability of the federation to source for dollars to prosecute the match.
The Super Eagles are expected to travel by a chartered flight to Ndola, for a showdown with Zambia on October 9 in one of the opening fixtures in Group B.
A reliable NFF source disclosed last night that aside other obligations, the executive committee was still banking on the Ministry of Sports to provide money to charter a flight to Ndola.
THISDAY also learnt last night that travel agencies were also declining to issue flight tickets to the foreign-based players invited by coach Gernot Rohr, stemming from the federation's failure to redeem outstanding debts on tickets previously issued.
Rohr, who will be overseeing his second match as the national coach, invited 20 players who ply their trades in Europe for the confrontation against the Cooper Bullets.
Though NFF did not pay a bonus to the players following their victory against Tanzania in Uyo last month, in an African Cup of Nations match deemed "a dead rubber", officials led by the President Amaju Pinnick, are unsure of how to shop for bonus, given the free fall of the naira in the parallel market.
An official, who pleaded not to be named, predicted an unfolding crisis in Ndola in view of the foreign exchange scarcity caused by global decline in price of oil.
The dollars exchanged for N450 to the Naira yesterday in the parallel market, a rate which NFF claimed it making a mess of its operation as its projection was made at the rate of N200 to a dollar for the season.
Meanwhile, Rohr has replaced injured defender Leon Balogun with Uche Henry Agbo. FSV Mainz 05 of Germany centre-back Balogun, who shone in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania in Uyo earlier this month, was named in Nigeria's 23-man roster for the big match before copping an injury.
Granada FC of Spain's Agbo has already been contacted by Rohr and his invitation letter sent to his club by the NFF.
He will join the other players who are expected to start arriving at the Bolton White Hotel and Apartments, Abuja on Sunday.

Edo Election Update: APC And PDP Candidates In Tight Race

edooooo
The Edo State governorship election, held on Wednesday, is a tight race between the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Godwin Obaseki and Peoples Democratic Party’s Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Early results from Wards in the state, which had not been authenticated by the Independent National Electoral Commission, indicated that the two candidates were running neck and neck in the poll.

The two parties, however, claimed to have gained comfortable lead in the election while accusing each other of planning to rig the poll.

While unconfirmed results showed that the PDP won seven out of the eight units in Ward 3, Uromi in the Esan North-East Local Government Area, where a former chairman of the BoT of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih, hails from, the APC won one unit.

Also, the APC lost in the polling unit of the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, where the PDP emerged victorious.

The APC, on its own, won in Ward 7 in the Oredo Local Government Area of the state.

The APC scored 4,412 votes while the PDP got 4,047 votes.

The governorship candidate of the PDP in the 2012 election in the state, Charles Airhiavbere, who is now in APC, led the party to beat the PDP in Unit 18, 19, 20 and 21 of Ward one in Oredo LGA.

In Unit 18, PDP got 158 while the APC got 259. In Unit 19, APC scored 146 and PDP polled 85.

In Unit 20, the APC got 259 votes while the PDP polled 208 votes and in Unit 21, the APC scored 128 votes leaving the PDP with 98 votes.

In Oredo Ward 12, out of the accredited 4,399 voters, the PDP took the lead with 2,066, leaving the APC with 2,041.

In Oredo Ward 4, out of the total accredited voters of 4,911, the APC scored 3,058 while the PDP polled 1,541.

PDP national leadership alleged on Wednesday night that APC was planning to overturn its alleged victory in the Edo State governorship election.

The party said the results it received from its agents in the state indicated that it was leading the APC with a wide merging in the election.

Spokesperson for the party and member of its National Caretaker Committee, Mr. Dayo Adeyeye, stated this in a statement in Abuja.

Adeyeye said, “Having received results from our agents at approximately 1,800 of the 2,627 polling units spread across the 192 wards in the 18 local government areas of Edo State, we can confirm that our party has attained a near unassailable lead in the Edo State governorship election.

“The results so far confirmed to us that our candidate has garnered approximately 55 per cent of the total votes cast by voters.’’

He alleged that the PDP was aware of the alleged connivance between the state government and a national commissioner at INEC to rig the election in favour of the ruling party in the state.

PDP’s Adeyeye, a former minister of state for works, added, “We will like to reiterate our earlier note of warning: The Edo people and our party will resist any attempt to subvert the collective will of the people as expressed by their votes today.”

He urged members and supporters of the party in the state to continue guarding their votes at the ward collation centres and the local government collation centres.

“Eternal vigilance is the price we all have to pay for victory,” he added.

APC accuses PDP of mischief
Reacting to claims by the PDP, the APC said the opposition party was being mischievous “as usual”.

APC National Vice-Chairman (South), Mr. Segun Oni, said, “The PDP is simply being mischievous. From the results I have seen from the field, from where we are monitoring the elections here in Abuja, the APC is in a comfortable lead.

“Out of a hundred, PDP has not won five, even in units they claim to have won. We are investigating because the number of voters exceeds the number of registered voters per unit.”

Meanwhile, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 5, Isaac Eke, described the election as very peaceful.

“The process has been peaceful; there was no hindrance to voters to exercise their franchise.”

SERIOUSLY? We Are Already Coming Out Of Recession – Finance Minister Says

minister-finance

Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, the Minister of Finance, has said Nigeria is already getting out of the economic recession, given the pragmatic approaches the Federal Government is taking to reverse the trend.
She said this on Wednesday while fielding questions from journalists at the end of a 2-day National Council of Finance and Economic Development conference held at the Green Legacy Resort, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.
It was held in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Finance with the theme: ‘Enhancing revenue generation and obtaining best value for money in expenditure.’
Commissioners of finance from the 36 states across the country were in attendance. The minister noted that since the problems have been identified, and steps are already being taken to block waste, the road to recovery was sure.
She said, “We are already getting out of recession because of the actions the Federal Government is taking. We’re investing more in capital than we have ever invested. We’re sorting out infrastructure, we are stopping wastage and so the signs of recovery are already there.”
She explained that agriculture and solid minerals are already starting to grow, as they are responding to government’s policy initiative.

Fashion in recession

In a recession, the economy is slow, businesses are unpredictable, all sectors are affected in one way or another. Recession in Nigeria is no news and while things might be going down, Nigerian girls have found a way to still look hot and sassy in this economic meltdown.

Seemingly, not in the least affected by the economy are fashionistas in Nigeria. These ladies breed and live fashion and not even almighty recession can halt their style craze. To be perfectly accurate, the recession might be favouring these divas for in times of trouble they say, solutions spring up. Maybe, just maybe the solution to the frowning economy is a cheaper option but in wanting to impress, they go all out; the result is, better style and completely gorgeous attires.

Arsenal 2-0 Basle: Gunners cruise to victory at the Emirates as Theo Walcott stars in Swiss roll

  • Theo Walcott's header gave the Gunners early lead before doubling their advantage in 27th minute
  • Arsene Wenger's side built on their impressive draw at Group A favourites Paris Saint-Germain
  • Gunners were without suspended striker Olivier Giroud and injured defender Francis Coquelin

It took just seven minutes for Arsenal to shift into cruise control on Wednesday night. Even then, Basle couldn't get near them.
In this mood, not many could. If you thought Saturday's first-half annihilation of Chelsea was special, then watch a replay of this win over Basle.
Pace, power, solidity, work rate with a sprinkle of that trademark Arsenal pizazz. It was all in the pot here at the Emirates Stadium. In the end a brace from the rejuvenated Theo Walcott was enough to secure victory for the Gunners as they built on their impressive draw at Group A favourites Paris Saint Germain.

Theo Walcott gives the Gunners the perfect start at the Emirates with a diving header to open the scoring

Basle goalkeeper Tomas Vaclík is left rooted to the ground as Walcott's early goal puts Arsenal in the driving seat

The in-form Gunners forward celebrates after his seventh minute strike seals a strong start for the home side in London

Walcott seizes on Alexis Sanchez's intelligent through ball to double Arsenal's advantage in the 26th minute

The 27-year-old's shot crashed in off the post to give the Gunners a fully deserved 2-0 lead heading towards the break

Walcott celebrates with his team-mates as his clinical brace ensures the Londoners maintain their impressive recent form

But it should have been more, way more; Arsenal's wastefulness the only glitch in what was otherwise an excellent night's work
For years, Arsene Wenger's been telling anyone who wants to hear that this group of players are on the cusp of something special.
For years, they have let us all down. Maybe, just maybe, it is time for us to sit up and take notice.
This team's detractors will point to Wednesday night's opposition. And, of course, there's credence to that argument; Arsenal should be despatching teams of Basel's calibre – despite their excellent record against English clubs.
But it was the controlled nature of this display that resonated; a control that hasn't always been so apparent of recent Arsenal teams.
The significant team news saw David Ospina replace usual first choice keeper Petr Cech as Wenger followed through with his promise to play the Colombian in the Champions League, while Granit Xhaka replaced the injured Francis Coquelin as he went head-to head with brother Taulant, who lined up for Basel.
Arsenal's last Champions League campaign started in poor fashion, losing their first two games before scrapping through to the group stages on the final match-day.
Wenger could do without such drama this season. After this he is likely to get his wish.
For all intents and purposes, this encounter was done and dusted in seven minutes after a move that was incisive and clinical in equal measures.
Santi Cazorla, deep inside his own half, found Alexis Sanchez down the left flank with a quite exquisite pass.
The Chilean's first time cross was just as majestic; so too was Walcott's bullet header as he left Basle defender Eder Balanta trailing in his wake before giving Arsenal the lead.

Edo governorship battle: Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu win poll units, Oyegun, Osunbor lose

Godwin Obaseki and Ize-IyamuBy Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor, Simon Ebegbulem, Gabriel Enogholase & Josephine Agbonkhese BENIN CITY—The two leading candidates in the Edo State governorship election, Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, were last night racing neck and neck against the background of mixed fortunes for some of the state’s leading political leaders. The biggest upset of the night was at the PU001 Staff Training School, Benin where the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, and wife of the PDP candidate, Dr. Idia Ize-Iyamu voted. The PDP won the unit by 78 votes to APC’s  69. Also, former Governor of the state, Oserhiemen Osunbor failed to deliver for the APC, as PDP won at his poling unit in Iruekpen, Esan West LGA by 168 to 120 votes. In other early results, the APC candidate won his unit by 160 votes to the 77 votes scored by the PDP candidate. The PDP candidate, however, won his unit (Unit 26 Ward 5 in Orhionmwon local government area) by 369 votes to the one vote recorded for the APC candidate. The outgoing governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole also won his voting centre in Ward 10, Unit 1, Iyamho in Etsako West LGA by 752 to 1 vote. In other early results, Chief Mike Oghiadhome, who served as Chief of Staff to President Goodluck Jonathan, also won in his polling unit by 308 to 214, while Senator Matthew Urhoghide, the PDP campaign manager, won his Unit 9 by 139 to 51. Against apprehension of violence, yesterday’s election relatively passed off smoothly with minimal reports of violence in the 18 local government areas of the state. The election was, however, largely marred by alleged inducement of voters with money being passed on to voters even on the queue. There was a heavy turnout of voters with many voters trekking long distances to their voting points. Godwin Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu The heavy turnout led to an extension of voting time in Ikpeshi, in Akoko Edo Local Government Area, where voting was ongoing as at 6.30 p.m. Voting commenced quite early in many voting centres as materials and election officials arrived early enough with accreditation and voting commencing simultaneously. Leading political officials, including the outgoing governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and the two major candidates, Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu all commended the turnout. There were few complaints about card reader malfunctioning in Emokpae Primary school Oredo, Ayogwiri in Etsako Central and some parts of Orhiowmon. However, INEC officials made frantic efforts to fix the situation. Obaseki voted at his unit 19, in Oredo ward 4 at about 10:30 am, while the candidate of the PDP, Pastor Ize-Iyamu voted at Unit 26, Ward 5, in Orhionmwon Local Government Area at about 9:53 a.m. Obaseki who arrived alongside his wife to vote, joined the queue and spent about 30 minutes before voting. Ize-Iyamu, however, got quick courtesy from those in his polling unit, as he on arrival, was immediately ushered by others on the queue to vote. The governorship candidate of the APGA, Osaro Onaiwu, who voted in Unit 27 Oredo Ward One, however, called on INEC to cancel the election, alleging inducement of voters as reasons. He told Vanguard, last night: “The turnout was impressive because Edo people wanted change. But the people where disenfranchised by the PDP and APC. This is not the democracy we laboured for. This is not the kind of democracy we want to leave for our children. “I asked for the cancellation since 2.p.m (yesterday) because there was no election. In my unit where I voted, the APC thugs went there, and they took the ballot box,” he alleged. Oyegun National chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, who voted in Ward 2 Oredo, described the process as very peaceful and transparent, saying “I am very pleasantly surprised because this is the best turn out I have ever experienced. It presumes that something good is about to happen, that people are keen to express their democratic options and that democracy has become totally wide spread. It is a very good omen. Odigie-Oyegun, who after voting was confronted with the allegation of inducement of voters, rebuffed the insinuation even as he commended the conduct of the election. On the inducement of voters as was allegedly observed by some people at his polling unit, he said: “When I look at a place like this, I don’t know how you can give someone money. How do you know somebody has voted, given how secret it truly is, nobody will know how you’ve thumb printed. Please, is there somebody sharing money, let me go to him and take my own.” Obaseki Speaking shortly after casting his vote, Obaseki commended the conduct of the election and expressed confidence that it will remain peaceful. According to him, “the election is very peaceful in most areas though we heard about an isolated incident somewhere in Edo Central.  I think it has been taken care of  by security agents. I believe that it will go well and for me, what is most important is that we did not lose blood because of elections. My hope is that we have a very peaceful election so that at the end of the day, we will strengthen our democracy. I am very optimistic of victory.” Ize-Iyamu Also speaking, Ize-Iyamu, who described the conduct of the election as peaceful, said: “We are praying to God that what we see here is the same thing we will see in other places. I am impressed. The turnout is massive, and the voters are orderly. They have been using security agencies to harass our people; even till last night. “I have also spoken to their superior, who has assured us that those who are doing so are on their own, but, they will call them to order. We are also aware that governors of two APC states are in Benin. That is worrisome. Campaigns have ended. “But, in spite of all that, we have held that some persons had planned to smuggle in results at the wards and local government levels. But, I am confident that this one will not work,” he stated. Onaiwu On his part, governorship candidate of the APGA, Osaro Onaiwu called on INEC to cancel the election, alleging “financial inducement, holiganism, violence. “I will not accept any declaration of any result; this is the worst election we have witnessed in Edo state. Where people share money in polling units is unacceptable. Look at what happened in Oluku and Ologbo thugs took over the entire place. At St Maria Goretti people were sharing money everywhere to bribe voters. It is unacceptable”. The Director General of the Obaseki, campaign organization, Osarodion Ogie, who voted in Unit 27, Ward 10 in Ikpoba Okhai, Local Government Area described the exercise as very peaceful and orderly. According to him, “unlike those days when you will hear complaints of late arrival of materials or voters apathy, you can see everything is well handled, and people are enjoying themselves today. The former chairman, Board of Trustees of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih, also commended the process of the election but, however, said it was too early to make a general statement when he voted. Governor Adams Oshiomhole also hailed the good logistics preparation for the election. Speaking shortly after casting his vote at Unit 1, Ward, Iyamho Primary School, Etsako West Local Government Area at 11.13am, Oshiomhole who also said he was impressed with the large turn-out of voters, however, said there were some incidents in some parts of the state which the security agencies and INEC should look into. While hailing the orderly manner at his polling unit, Oshiomhole said: “I believe this is a perfect example of the way it should be, but I cannot tell you that this is the way it is in other places because I have not been to those places.  But I have received a report just now from the Onojie of Opoji that PDP thugs went and removed the card reader in order to prevent the people of Opoji from voting. So, we are dealing with that because the people have a right to vote. That right cannot be compromised, and INEC has a duty, a non-negotiable duty to ensure that the people of Opoji have a right to vote. “I don’t know how that happened because they are supposed to have enough security in every polling unit, and if you have security in every polling unit, and some rascals and hoodlums can still come and carry the card reader, then that raises a number of issues both on the part of INEC and the security people detailed to protect the INEC, the materials, the voters in Opoji. That doesn’t mean this is happening everywhere, but that is where I have a report now. “There are reports we are following up, but at this point, it will be too early for one to draw any conclusion. My unit is only one village out of thousands of villages in Edo State.” The PDP, however, raised apprehension about the delay in the collation of results alleging that it was a plot by the APC and some INEC officials to rig the election. The party in a statement issued late last night by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Chris Nehikhare said, “We wish to let Edo people know that there has been enough time for the INEC to start announcing the ward results. Voting stopped at 2 p.m. and votes were counted immediately at the unit levels.” “From results made available to us we are in a very comfortable lead. We are however shocked that till now no ward result has been declared. We are aware that APC and INEC plan to change the result at the collation centre and we wish to warn that any change to the result we are already aware of will be met with stiff resistance. “INEC should tell Governor Adams Oshiomhole that the changing and swapping of results at the collation center is a no-no! Even worse is the attempt to prevent our agents into the collation centers. “We however advice our supporters and members to remain calm. In a few more hours, the liberation of Edo will be official” Speaking on the conduct of the election, the chairperson of the TMG, Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi said: “There was early commencement of election day process, materials arrived early too, except in few places. The election appears to be peaceful in most of the polling units visited; there were reports of few cases of violence particularly ballot box snatching and political party agents instigated crises. There are also reports of huge inducements by political parties. However the turn out looks impressive, INEC had few cases of late starting, their distribution has since improved, minimal cases of card reader malfunctioning and INEC seems to have an effective ICT unit, that is mobile and was able to resolve most of the problems. Programme Officer, National Association for Peaceful Elections in Nigeria, NAPEN, Ifeanyi Adigwe in his own assessment of the election, also confirmed that though the voting process started out peacefully in most parts of the state, also alluded to pockets of violence towards midday. “At Adolor Ward(Polling Unit 8) in Ovia-North LGA, election was canceled because a strange man came threatening to snatch the ballot boxes. At Irrua in Edo Central, the card reader was malfunctioning, and people were later advised to wash their hands with water and soap before thumb-printing. “At Jatu, the process started out peacefully also but at noon, some unknown gun men tried to disrupt it by shooting sporadically. Nobody was however killed because security personnel waded in. But at that time, most people had scampered for safety. This security breach eventually affected voters’ turnout. “In Benin City in general, the election process was peaceful throughout morning, but towards noon also, violence erupted in some areas due to the unruly behavior of party agents.

Edo Decides As Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu Go For Broke

Today, the battle line is drawn as the political forces of the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole-led All Progressives Congress (APC) and Chief Tony Anenih’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) battle for the soul of  Heartbeat of the nation, Edo State, as political parties scramble for 1,925,105 registered voters. PATRICK OCHOGA writes.

Pfter months of intense campaigns by political parties for the Edo seat of power, the electorate will today decide who between the two major candidates, Mr Godwin Obaseki, of the APC and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, of the PDP, will steer the ship of the state for another four years.
For the PDP and its candidate, today’s elections can be said to be the last opportunity for the party to reclaim the power it lost to the APC in 2007 when it was Action Congress (AC) or be prepared to go into political oblivion.
In 2007, Edo people kissed goodbye to the  ten years of the Peoples Democratic Party-led government, which included eight years under former Governor Lucky Igbinedion and another eighteen months of Professor Oserhemen Osunbor, and ushered in the now defunct Action Congress (AC) administration that later metamorphosed into the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and now the legacy parties of one All Progressives Congress (APC) which  has for the past seven and half years steered the ship of the state under the stewardship of Governor Adams Eric Aliyu Oshiomhole, a former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
Interestingly, the battle for Osabedey’s avenue is between two popular Benin families, the Ize-Iyamu’s and the Obaseki’s. Expectedly, the candidates have proven their determination and poise during the months of political campaigns with messages laced with offer of self-sacrifices to serve the state and its people.
The PDP candidate, having enjoyed an equal endorsement like the APC candidate, it is however expected that the economic recession under the APC-led Buhari administration may affect the way Edo electorate may vote owing the general economic down turn biting hard on Nigerians.
While for the ruling APC’s ‘change’ mantra slogan is not helping matter  while the PDP’s ‘change the change’ sing song is flowing from some of flip-flop of the APC-led administration and the people are clamoring for the change the change song of the PDP.
Be that as it may, some observers are however of the view that the people are likely to vote based on their perception of the two political parties, APC and PDP which have at one time or the other, been in power. The APC during the campaign proudly reeled out records of it’s performance which are visible for all to see across the three senatorial districts.
It is however a different kettle of fish for the PDP which over the years is saddled with huge moral question hanging on it’s neck. The years the party held sway were commonly referred to the years of locust, and a sad history for the people.
The contest, no doubt, is a two-horse race for the APC’s Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki and the PDP’s Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. One does not need much robes to sermonize that it’s payback time too either ways, for good or bad done within the folds and therefore surprises are not ruled out.
The irreconcilable quest to reap where one did not sow is the grueling war between forces of PDP governors and Oshiomhole’s APC in Edo state. Oshiomhole, as man of many battles, is set with proves of defeat to Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, former Governor Lucky Igbinedion, Chief Tom Ikimi, Chief Tony Anenih, five PDP governors from the South-South geo-political zone, even with their enormous financial war chests.
Edo is the only APC controlled state in the oil rich region and to the PDP governors, it’s a bride for a hot chase. To President Muhammadu Buhari and APC leaders and governors, Edo is key to deciding the 2019 Presidential project for the ruling party.
Beyond all calculations, one needs not be reminded that Mr. President is keen at seeing APC win the Heartbeat state and that informed his recent official visit to Edo since after his election in 2015.
At the moment, Edo south is seen as the focus and possible theatre of war in the contest. Both the APC candidate Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki and his PDP counterpart, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu come from the populous south senatorial zone with an estimated 56 percent of population of the state and seven local government areas in its kitty. Edo south is also the stronghold of Deputy Governor, Dr. Pius Odubu and national chairman of APC, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, the supportive stance of two time governor of Midwest and Bendel state, Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia and former Deputy Governor, Lucky Imasuen.

Godwin Obaseki (APC)
Strength
As Oshiomhole’s choice and trusted political ally, having served as the chairman of Edo state Economic Team and key actor in the engineering room that drives the government of the day for the past eight years, he stands the chance to ride on the back of Oshiomhole’s goodwill and achievements to emerge tops. This is despite allegations and criticisms of his imposition by some APC leaders and aspirants that contested the party’s ticket. Of course, Oshiomhole has the right just like any other to make choices. Obaseki with fresh ideas and unadulterated disposition to governance as well as strong skills in investment drive for growth and enhanced welfare through empowerment programmes as well as industrialization and reach to big financial heavy weights across the country, has the fullest support of both APC national leadership, state and key political actors, professionals and business magnates and industrialists in the governorship project. The pedigree and understanding of economy of the APC gubernatorial candidate is also another sterling factor that may sway many votes in his favour, especially, given the country’s present economic recession. Indeed, he intends to create 200,000 job in the first four years while in office with a well-defined programme for the women through micro-credit schemes to enable them expand their trade and businesses.
Besides, the party’ leadership and members are also united in the onerous task to deliver the party and its candidate which informed the peace committee that worked assiduously to assuage the pains of all aggrieved members who had before now threatened to work against the party.
Also, for the simple reason that the APC controls the power at the centre, it is evident that its not the wish of Edo state to be in opposition with the federal, unlike its past experience during the ex-President Goodlcuk Jonathan’s administration in which the state was denied huge ecological funds.
Furthermore, it is hoped that block votes from Edo north which is Oshiomhole’s political power base added to his numerous strides in the area and reasonable chunk from Chief Tony Anenih’s central senatorial zone boost Mr. Obaseki victory. In the south senatorial district with its 58 per cent of the voting population;  Oshiomhole’s performance index and the large support of the ancient palace as well as various groups will root out the PDP. Oshiomhole’s sizzling feat has eqarned him as the political gd of Afemai people in Edo North due to the developmental strides he brought to the area. The senatorial district controls about 26 per cent of the state voting population and the recent ceding of the deputy governorship slot to the area makes much impact too seeing their own Hon Phillip Shaibu, the Deputy governorship candidate in the race, and in the process gives the APC a smooth sail in the area.
However, PDP commands huge popularity in the Central zone too with the likes of Chief Anthony Anenih, Chief Tom Ikimi, Mike Onolemenme, Senator Clifford Odia, Senator Odion Ugbesia, and others, except for Senator (Prof.) Oserheimen Osunbor who is now an APC chieftain.
Weakness
Critics are of the view that Obaseki, a renowned investment expert, banker and politician is Oshiomhole’s stooge and may be tele-guided by the outgoing governor if he becomes the governor of the state. There is also the fear that Obaseki’s government may not be disposed to professional politicians and hawks in government with penchant for juicy contracts and sumptuous largess. It is further considered that the growing economic recession biting already aggrieved citizens of the nation under President Buhari’s administration may be a big blow for the party’s candidate at the poll.

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu
Generally, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu is seen as a grassroots  politician and one who has seen it all  in the politics of Edo state. He is a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God and one of the key actors of the then PDP led government in the state. He served as former Chief of Staff (COS) and later Secretary to the Edo State Government (SSG) during the eight years administration of ex-Governor Lucky Igbinedion (1999 and 2007). As a kitchen cabinet member of the Igbinedion government and arrowhead, he was reputed as championing the cause of the Grace Group, a splinter body that rebelled against the seeming dictatorial tendencies of Chief Tony Anenih in the state chapter of the PDP following an internal crisis in the heat of the Igbinedion’s second term in office. Before his nomination as candidate of PDP, he was an erstwhile National Vice Chairman, South-South zone of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria and later APC member. Ize-Iyamu played a key role n the government of Governor Adanms Oshiomhole as one of the point men during the first term and served as director-general of Oshiomhole’s campaign organization for his reelection. The gargantuan politician later fell out of favour with Oshiomhole and moved back to the PDP with his crowd of loyalists. He later became the coordinator of former President Goodluck Jonathan/Sambo Campaign Organization for the South-South zone in 2015.

Strength
Pastor Ize-Iyamu’s foresight and deep rooted political activism stretches across many quarters and is considered a strong factor in the politics of the state. This is basically dawn from his master strokes in ability to dislodge strongholds and his aura to command multitude of followership. As an octopus he has his tentacles spread across other political circles where his secret influence has played roles that break the jinx of forces whose stands pose as hard nuts to crack. This is also seen in the religious circle because of his dept and understanding of the inner workings of political actors in the APC and PDP.
He is favourably disposed to the growing antics of South-South PDP governors to dislodge the APC in Edo state, a secret but open plot that has sparked a deadly battle between forces of both the APC and the PDP in the country. Besides, it is feared that massive votes may be swayed in his favour in sympathy because of the country’s retrogressive economic fortunes. Ize-Iyamu has within the periods of the running campaign across the state reeled out explosive and damning message to the people in Edo central whih centered on alleged marginalization of the area by the Oshiomhole administration and had asked the people to use their PVCs to give victory to PDP. In addition, the APC led government may face a tough time securing the hearts of voters in some of the local government areas, especially, where workers in the third tier of government are being owed months of arrears of salaries even though government had refuted reports of not owing the council workers. Same goes for pensioners, although, positive action is being taken by the APC led government to wriggle itself out of the seeming snag. Pensioners are now heaving sighs of relief as their names have been captured in the state pension scheme to enable them receive their pensions alongside civil servants in the state as well as local government workers.

Weakness
Aside the opposition party’s ferocious attacks and expose against the government of the day, Ize-Iyamu is facing the tough and storm he stirred while in government. His inseparable link with the Igbinedion dynasty and politics is not giving him the leverage. Also, the eight years of the government he served and played active role as COS and SSG respectively till today, to critics and analysts, is seen as the locust years and most wasteful due to the huge resources that were allegedly frittered away with little to show for it. The PDP governorship candidate has made positive efforts to debunk the allegations and to exonerate himself from any damning accusations.
Again, the yet to be healed wounds arising from the internal crisis trailing the national leadership of the PDP has given a hard knock on his chance at the poll. Though, the INEC recognizes him as the party’s candidate, the ticket is torn between Ize-Iyamu and the Modu Sheriff factional candidate, Hon. Mathew Iduoriyekewem. In addition, the age long festering crisis and loss of confidence within the opposition have combined to force most PDP faithful to defect to the APC over alleged imposition and lack of purposeful leadership. Among the eggheads of te PDP who have bid bye to it and now have abiding faith in the APC are the likes of Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia, former deputy governor Lucky Imasuen, ex-Governor Oserheimen Osunbor and several others leaders and members from across the state.
